Rohit Sharma Wasn’t Interested To Lead In All Three Formats: Sourav Ganguly

Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has revealed Rohit Sharma did not want to lead Team India in all the three formats. The Mumbai star took charge of the limited-overs teams in December 2021 after Virat Kohli was sacked as the ODI captain.

Before that, Kohli had stepped down as the T20I captain as well. Just before the 2021 T20 World Cup, Kohli had announced that he would step down as the captain after the tournament. And in February 2022, Rohit Sharma was appointed the Test captain as well after Kohli’s sudden decision to step down as the Test captain after the series defeat in South Africa.

Even Rohit Sharma was shocked by Kohli’s decision to leave Test captaincy despite the successful stint as he wrote on Instagram: “Shocked!! But congratulations on a successful stint as captain.” Sourav Ganguly has now revealed that the veteran batsman was not ready to accept the captaincy in all the three formats but eventually agreed.

“I pushed Rohit Sharma a bit to take up the captaincy role because he wasn’t interested to lead in all three formats of the game. So, maybe I have a bit of contribution in that but no matter who is administrating, it’s the players who perform well on the field. I was appointed as the President of BCCI to work for the betterment of Indian cricket, this is a small part of it,” Sourav Ganguly said on reality TV show Dadagiri Unlimited Season 10.

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy record so far:

Under Rohit Sharma, India qualified for the semifinal of the T20 World Cup last year before making it to the final of the ODI World Cup last month. He received praise from all around for his captaincy and batting performance during the competition as he led India to the final of the World Cup for the first time since 2011.

Before the World Cup, India clinched the Asia Cup title. Earlier this year, India also qualified for the final of the World Test Championship where they lost against Australia. Rohit Sharma will be seen in action later this month when he leads the team in the Test series against South Africa.
